About: In the Great War
In the Great War: Accounts of WWI is a podcast series on the history of World War One.
Your host, Todd Woofenden, is the editor of The Subchaser Archives, a naval history site covering the U.S. submarine chasers of WWI, and author of Hunters of the Steel Sharks: The Submarine Chasers of WWI.
You will see a theme of U.S. Navy topics in the podcast series, but not exclusively. Topics related to the land war, weapons, and individual service men's stories are also included in the mix.
As all fellow WWI history enthusiasts surely know, there is a relative scarcity of mutimedia content on the first world war: The Great War is largely overlooked and forgotten. Schools brush past it in history class, casting it as merely a prelude to WWII (if it's covered at all), and while there are many excellent books on WWI topics, the web is curiously quiet on the subject.
In the Great War is one small measure to address this deficiency.
A word from the host of In the Great War:
These podcasts are a way for me to peruse bits of history that deserve to be remembered.
I want to tell short, entertaining stories about interesting facets of WWI, without the need for great polish or choreography.
In the video streams I show period photographs and artifacts, and in the audio I present a lot of primary source content from personal journals, letters and official military correspondence.
Please chime in. Register on the site to leave comments on the site, or use the contact form to let me know what you think. What I enjoy most about studying WWI is the conversations I have with others. I welcome suggestions for topics, guest speakers or content.
